Neurodiversity & Inclusion

Need for Neurodiversity Awareness in Mental Health Education

Broadening the Lens:

Education in this space must embrace both neurodiversity and disability through a biopsychosocial lens. It means understanding how different minds process the world, while actively acknowledging the systemic barriers that create vulnerability and marginalization. We have to look at the whole picture, not just individual traits.

The Transdisciplinary Shift:

Young professionals need a transdisciplinary approach. True education bridges reflective work with legal literacy, specifically navigating the intersections of Indian mental health and disability laws. It is about understanding rights and marginalization, not just avoiding misdiagnosis. We are aiming to build inclusive, reflective spaces where people know their lived experiences matter.

The New Question:

We must entirely abandon the question, "What is wrong with this person?" Instead, we need to ask: "How do we co-create a space that honors their agency, upholds their rights, and builds collective support?" This shift moves the power back to the individual. It validates their reality and allows them to trust themselves, rather than relying on experts to tell them how to cope.

Co-creating the Future:

Ultimately, this work is about co-creating knowledge and strengthening skills together. When we empower agency and build collective support systems, we move beyond mere awareness and start shaping a society rooted in actual equity and rights.
